Dear friends,

Season's greetings from the Alumni.

1. What a monumental year 2019 has been! It was a busy year filled with a hive of activities and I would like to briefly mention a few which we consider our crowning achievements. (Further details of these and other activities will be presented in the upcoming Annual Report 2019).

(a) The 85th Anniversary & Homecoming celebrations in July was a milestone event now forever etched in CBM memory. We would like to thank everyone in the CBM community for giving us your overwhelming support.

(b) The Alumni is very proud of the 8 past students of CBM who served on the 2017-2019 Board of Governors (BOG) helmed by the very capable Ms Catherine Tan of Class of 1978 as Chair. Many who came back for the Homecoming were in awe of the amazing results of the efforts undertaken by the BOG to rehabilitate, restore and refurbish the heritage buildings and facilities of our alma mater.

(c) As past pupils of CBM, we gain so much more than just an education, so it is natural that we try to give as much back as we can. The Alumni would like to thank the following alumnae for their contribution in cash and in kind to CBM this year.

         i.            Class of 1988 (led by Oon Hooi Khee) collectively contributed RM13,056 for the purchase and installation of one LCD projector and 37 wall fans at CBM Secondary.
ii.            Class of 1977 (led by Ewe Lay Khim) collectively contributed RM7,800 for the purchase and installation of 2 water coolers and 8 sets of new window blinds for the meeting room at CBM Secondary.
iii.            Dr. Ophelia Fernandez of Class of 1994 (with the help of her mother Dr. Mary) donated a pre-loved piano to CBM Primary.
iv.            Class of 1978 (led by Catherine Tan) collectively contributed cash and in kind for the upgrade of various school equipment and facilities carried out by the BOG.
        v.            Cash donations by Sivajogam Sinnathamby (Class of 1955) and Kok Chin Seow (Class of 1972) for underprivileged pupils of CBM.

If you and your classmates would also like to contribute please contact the Alumni.

2. As the outgoing committee approaches the end of its tenure and in preparation of the 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM), we seek support from members who will serve in the incoming committee to be elected for the 2020/2021 term.

3. The 13th AGM will be held on Saturday 21st March 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Meeting Room of SMKCBM. The Secretary will be sending you the Notice of Meeting, Proxy Form, Nomination Form and Consent by Candidate.

4. As I take my bow after 4 years as your President, I thank you for the honour and the privilege to have served on the Alumni committee for 2 terms. But most of all I thank you for your unwavering support and friendship. I look forward to seeing you at the 13th AGM.

5. Enjoy the Christmas/New Year holidays with family and friends. My outgoing committee and I wish you and yours a very Happy New Year. All the best for year 2020.

Thank you.

Warm regards.

SMK CONVENT BUKIT MERTAJAM
formely known as STE. MARGUERITE’S SCHOOL  (established 1 March 1934)
85TH ANNIVERSARY AND HOMECOMING
6 July 2019 (Saturday)

SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam, fondly remembered as Ste. Marguerite’s School, celebrated its 85th Anniversary with Homecoming activities at the school from 8:00am to noon, culminating with a reunion dinner and dance at The Light Hotel Seberang Jaya.

Ably led by the President of the Convent Bukit Mertajam Alumni, Mdm Ewe Lay Khim, the anniversary saw months of preparations coordinating the nuns (Sisters of Infant Jesus), principals of the primary and secondary schools, former teachers and past students to grace the occasion.

Distinguished founder President Puan Sri Datuk Zainab binti Abdul Kader and past presidents of the Alumni were saluted for making the Alumni and its activities a cherished tradition since its inception in 2007.

HOMECOMING

The whole-hearted support of Alumni life members and the school community made up of students, teachers and support staff of the secondary school led by the principal Mdm Goi Goit Sim, saw a hive of activities in the morning at the Homecoming carnival attended by over 300 past and present students.

Alumnae enjoyed the morning reminiscing, literally walking down memory lane and revisiting their former stomping grounds in the school. The carnival re-enacted the school atmosphere of the past with food and beverage booths, traditional games, folk dances and even a vintage classroom complete with a real blackboard, the original Convent school navy blue pleated pinafore and other nostalgic memorabilia.

The Homecoming was privileged to be privy to the Board of Governors’ video of the meaningful restoration of the school to its former glory of the school infrastructure and landscape under the amazing tutelage of the Chair of the Board of Governors, Ms. Catherine Tan Wei Ming.

DINNER AND DANCE

The celebrations continued at the dinner and dance where the former students gathered and enjoyed the evening catching up with childhood friends many of whom they had not met since they left school.

The guests were entertained to songs and dances performances, and joined in as they danced and ‘berjoget’ the night away.

The reunion dinner highlighted the previously little known early history of the school and the accolades of its past students, noting their pride in distinguished founder member Datuk Mohaiyani Shamsudin the present Chairman of Mayank.

Guests exclaimed in amazement as a miniature replica of the school 3-D cake was brought in.

The Alumni also records its appreciation of the support of its corporate sponsors Wah Chan, Zeon Properties, Dr. Mecherl Herbs Therapy & Complementary Medicine, Living Well, Two Seven Coffee, Sunquick and Keluarga.

SIMPLE IN VIRTUE, STEADFAST IN DUTY

True to the spirit of the school motto Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty, the current batch of students assisted by school teachers headed by school counsellor Mdm Sivakamasundari Arumugam under the administration of the school principal Mdm Goi Goit Sim are to be lauded for their enthusiastic hard work and support of the school especially at this 85th Anniversary and Homecoming celebrations.

The Alumni is happy to note the unwavering support of its over 240 life members, especially those who came back from as far as Singapore, China, Australia and the United Kingdom to celebrate this milestone event and looks forward to many more successful turnouts of its members to cherish and enjoy the “Convent Spirit” at future events.
