SMK CONVENT BUKIT MERTAJAM
formely known as STE. MARGUERITE’S SCHOOL  (established 1 March 1934)
85TH ANNIVERSARY AND HOMECOMING
6 July 2019 (Saturday)

SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam, fondly remembered as Ste. Marguerite’s School, celebrated its 85th Anniversary with Homecoming activities at the school from 8:00am to noon, culminating with a reunion dinner and dance at The Light Hotel Seberang Jaya.

Ably led by the President of the Convent Bukit Mertajam Alumni, Mdm Ewe Lay Khim, the anniversary saw months of preparations coordinating the nuns (Sisters of Infant Jesus), principals of the primary and secondary schools, former teachers and past students to grace the occasion.

Distinguished founder President Puan Sri Datuk Zainab binti Abdul Kader and past presidents of the Alumni were saluted for making the Alumni and its activities a cherished tradition since its inception in 2007.

HOMECOMING

The whole-hearted support of Alumni life members and the school community made up of students, teachers and support staff of the secondary school led by the principal Mdm Goi Goit Sim, saw a hive of activities in the morning at the Homecoming carnival attended by over 300 past and present students.

Alumnae enjoyed the morning reminiscing, literally walking down memory lane and revisiting their former stomping grounds in the school. The carnival re-enacted the school atmosphere of the past with food and beverage booths, traditional games, folk dances and even a vintage classroom complete with a real blackboard, the original Convent school navy blue pleated pinafore and other nostalgic memorabilia.

The Homecoming was privileged to be privy to the Board of Governors’ video of the meaningful restoration of the school to its former glory of the school infrastructure and landscape under the amazing tutelage of the Chair of the Board of Governors, Ms. Catherine Tan Wei Ming.

DINNER AND DANCE

The celebrations continued at the dinner and dance where the former students gathered and enjoyed the evening catching up with childhood friends many of whom they had not met since they left school.

The guests were entertained to songs and dances performances, and joined in as they danced and ‘berjoget’ the night away.

The reunion dinner highlighted the previously little known early history of the school and the accolades of its past students, noting their pride in distinguished founder member Datuk Mohaiyani Shamsudin the present Chairman of Mayank.

Guests exclaimed in amazement as a miniature replica of the school 3-D cake was brought in.

The Alumni also records its appreciation of the support of its corporate sponsors Wah Chan, Zeon Properties, Dr. Mecherl Herbs Therapy & Complementary Medicine, Living Well, Two Seven Coffee, Sunquick and Keluarga.

SIMPLE IN VIRTUE, STEADFAST IN DUTY

True to the spirit of the school motto Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty, the current batch of students assisted by school teachers headed by school counsellor Mdm Sivakamasundari Arumugam under the administration of the school principal Mdm Goi Goit Sim are to be lauded for their enthusiastic hard work and support of the school especially at this 85th Anniversary and Homecoming celebrations.

The Alumni is happy to note the unwavering support of its over 240 life members, especially those who came back from as far as Singapore, China, Australia and the United Kingdom to celebrate this milestone event and looks forward to many more successful turnouts of its members to cherish and enjoy the “Convent Spirit” at future events.
